Teach Your Kids Healthy Habits

We can't know the value of our assets until we lose them. Our health is a key concern. What makes it very dangerous is that we often aren’t aware of our health until we get sick.

The opportunity to return to childhood could save my health, but sadly, that's something we only hear from the elderly. If you didn’t care about your health when you were a kid, don’t let this pattern be repeated by your children. You are the parent who can teach them what it means to be healthy, what it means to care about health, and what it means to harm it.

Even though sometimes their impulses and desires will lead them to eat food that can cause illness, the role of a parent is to provide their children with a comprehensive understanding of health as something that needs protection. It is also a long-term project we build day after day.

Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Meta, was asked what advice he would give to his children. Mark said, "The first thing my children should care about is their health and their relationships with family and friends." Health comes first; without health, a person cannot enjoy their life or relationships. Awareness of health is the most important lesson you should teach your kids.

Lack of awareness about health could cost your children heavily. Without health, they cannot pursue their dreams. Here are four tips to help your kids recognize that health is pivotal :

1. Model Healthy Behavior.

We hear this phrase a lot when someone talks about their parents: "I used to see my mom doing this when I was a kid," or "I used to see my dad doing this when I was a kid; that’s why I like to do it." What you do as a mother or father can have a significant impact on your children. Therefore, show them the healthy habits that you want them to adopt. For example, eating nutritious food and going to the gym regularly would motivate your children to do at least some of what you do, but what is important is to build a habit of caring about their health.

2. Educate Them About Health.

Education doesn’t only take place in school; you can create your own schedule to teach your kids the importance of health. Bring in sheets of diagrams to warn them that people who neglect their health may face problems in the future or as they age.

3. Make Healthy Habits Fun.

Turning activities into fun experiences can encourage us to participate excitedly, without feeling like it’s a chore. You can apply fun activities with your children to motivate them to adopt healthy habits, like playing motivating music while they are running or exercising. Set goals, such as if they reduce eating junk food, they will earn a treat, or you will take them to a place they enjoy.

4. Teach Hygiene Practices.

Good hygiene practices can prevent bacteria from entering your kids’ bodies and help them stay clean. Here are some hygiene practices to teach:

  • Hand Hygiene: Washing hands before meals prevents the transfer of germs from hands to food. Children frequently forget to wash their hands after using the bathroom, but it is crucial to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses. Outdoor activities can expose children to dirt, germs, and allergens, thus encourage them to use soap and scrub all parts of their hands, particularly between the fingers and under their nails. Furthermore, when they cough or sneeze, it is important for them to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow; this practice can protect them from potential infections and illnesses.

  • Oral Hygiene: Tooth pain is one of the most painful experiences. As a parent, teach your children to brush their teeth at least twice a day, ensuring they cover all surfaces of their teeth. Hygiene practices should be taught by parents to help their children become aware of their hygiene across various aspects of their lives.

Health is essential for survival on this planet. Being aware early can save your children from future problems.

Parents should take the initiative to instill in their children's minds why they need to care about their health. They can teach their kids the importance of health and the things children should do to improve their health, like oral hygiene, hand hygiene, making healthy habits fun, and modeling healthy behavior. From time to time, as a parent, remind your children about their health. The lessons parents teach their children about health will shape their health in the future.
